Preparing for the October Northern Expedition!

Last week, volunteers got a glimpse of exciting plans for the first Northern Expedition planned in October!
This event will bring together global and local scientists, as well as volunteers to do an intensive survey of our Northern shores.

The Expedition will cover areas in the Johor Straits, including awesome sites like Changi as well as Sungei Buloh.
The Expedition will be based at Outward Bound Singapore on Pulau Ubin so we will have lots of opportunities to survey  amazing places like Chek Jawa and nearby Pulau Sekudu.
Koh Kwan Siong followed up with a more indepth briefing of what volunteers can expect. Volunteers will be needed to help with major tasks such as taking photos, helping out in the field surveys, sorting out the animals after the field trip, helping to preserve the animals, and many other logistics tasks. There will be regular boat rides daily from Changi Jetty to Ubin OBS at 8am, 12pm and 4pm, and from Ubin OBS to Changi Jetty at 9am, 1pm, 5pm and 9pm.
Some of the more experiences and enthusiastic volunteers will be given more responsibilities. Special training will be provided to prepare them.
But all are welcome to volunteer for the Expedition! On-the-job guidance will be provided by experts and specialist volunteers. Every hand offered in help will be gratefully appreciated.
Dr Tan Koh Siang shared more about what we have found and the plans ahead for the Survey.
Among the most exciting is the survey of Singapore's seabed. This is the first time a comprehensive survey is being done in a systematic manner. Singapore's waters, which is about as large as our land, has been divided into 200 sectors and each is going to be sampled.
The dredge survey involves taking small samples of the seabed with various methods. Volunteers will be needed to help sort out the animals from the seabed samples. It's like a treasure hunt! You never know what you might find!
Here's the locations that have been sampled so far. There's lots more to do! Volunteers are needed for these surveys. Here's a glimpse of what happens during a dredging survey of the seabed.
Coming ahead, are plans to also survey the reefs underwater and also the intertidal areas at low tide. Volunteer will be needed for both efforts.
So far, we have found lots of marine life!
Here's some photos of these special finds!
Earlier in the session, Dr Lena Chan had a Q&A session to gather feedback from the volunteers.
We also enjoyed a lovely spread kindly arranged by Kwan Siong.
Lots of volunteers turned  up for this event! The numbers are more obvious in the line up for the food than in the spacious briefing venue. It was also a great time to catch up with everyone!
Come join the Mega Marine Survey to help us learn more about our shores!

Thanks to Kwan Siong, here are the presentation slides of the briefing.
